Rebab

Rebab

Associated with Sultan Veled (Hz. Mevlana's son) and his book Rebabname. Some says Hz. Mevlana himself also played the rebab.

Bowed, with three strings, two of them being metal wrapped around silk and one is of horse tail. Mostly played on the horsehair string. The bow is also made of horsehair.

The body is made of coconut shell and is covered with catfish skin. Origins are in Central Asia.

Rebab is a fretless instrument but frets can be added for ease to play. It is not a common instrument in orchestra.

It was used in music therapy by Seljuks.
